International Label Spotlight: Deep Water Recordings (UK)

Its been just about an entire year since the DeeBuGG boys (John Walker and Bourne Van Gello) stumbled out onto the patio of the cozy hostel we all shared in Frankfurt’s Red Light District and introduced themselves to Robert Tellier and myself. Little (or not at all I should say) did I know that was the beginning of a transatlantic friendship that would last through a passion for house music. The duo has been impressing us with their relentless releases, grabbing attention and support from techno giants worldwide and underground heads alike. Now, they have decided to expand their brand in the form of Deep Water Recordings.

Since launching, the label has collected artists, not only at home in the UK, but in other staple regions of the ever expanding underground dance music scene. Various UK producers on the imprint including founders, John and Bourne, hail from cities like London, Brighton, Cheshire, Belfast and of course, Liverpool. The group then reached across channels and even oceans to sign the likes of Anthony Sabadie (Montpelier, France), Agus Azcona (Madrid, Spain), and someone we have already come to know here at home, Raul Peña (Miami, US).

The reach across boarders ensures that Deep Water can sustain a fresh sound within the house, techno and tech house genres– each artist bringing his or her own style and particular, regional nuance to the labels overall sound. I got a chance to chat with the boys about the label– the whos, whats, whens and hows.

Reason / Concept behind creating the label:
Our reason for launching Deep Water Recordings is pretty simple, we are both massive fans of techno and the underground dance scene, so the idea of starting our own label has always been there really. The concept of Deep Water Recordings and the way the theme and structure of the label has been put together took around six months. We thought hard about the long running of the label and where we could see it going in two years time– from organising label parties through out the UK and abroad, the artwork on releases, the music– we went through it all and now we have it were we want it. We can start to see the label moving forward rapidly.

Production experience:
Without the production team at Deep Water we wouldn’t be a label at all. Once we recieve releases from one of our ten artists the tracks go to mastering the same time as the artwork is designed. Where now we have that unique sound and  superb graphics to match our releases, without this the label simply would not work.

Inspirations for the label:
As you know we have appeared in Mybeatfix before with regards to our releases as DeeBuGG, which in itself has been some what of a journey,. After launching Deep Water Recordings that journey has taken us to a whole new level and I think the inspiration for us launching our label comes from seeing the likes of Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin and others push there labels and brands to a global level. Also producing from the likes of Magda, and Nicole Moudaber.

Current Projects on the label:
At the moment the top of the list for projects and talking point has got to be our label parties this year in London and our all-day, all-night party in Brighton– both of which are shaping up to be two superb events and have sold tickets as far as france. Along with one artist Raul Peña coming all the way from your home town of Miami for  the Brighton event.

Below are a few previews of current and upcoming releases on the label from Chanel Cochrane, DeeBuGG and Chloe Fontaine. Enjoy and keep your eyes and ears open for this up and coming label.
