Fresh Fix: Simon Baker’s Rikers EP on FINA records

Simon Baker was truly a great fit for mybeatFix’s Fresh Fix series. This year has witnessed a sort of rebirth for Baker, who has also released this EP, Riker, on a fresh name in an immense landscape of house music labels, FINA Records.

Re;eased on July 9, the EP gives glances of today’s deep sound with an emphasis on hats and spacier synths and pads. The title track “Riker” is a seriously fun track– already a personal dance-party must. Refusing to spoil the first listen, I’ll simply share that some really classic samples, chauffeured along by melodic, rising bells and prancing hats makes for a great track to get a dance floor moving.

The EP flows along, maybe not in style and execution, but in tempo. “Geo” keeps the dance floor vibe intact while bringing more of a current sound. The prancing hats are back, but this time tagging along eerily echoed voice samples and spaced out pads and a deep, bouncy bass.

Eliphino’s “Riker” remix closes the EP with attitude. A straight up two minute self introduction with hats (absolutely LOVE the hat work on this EP), chopped up vocal samples and some classic piano work lead to a proper big bass, rimshot, soulful, rolling deep beat (what a mouth-full, but damn it felt right).

Below, we got a chance to get some insight from Baker himself on the EP. Simon explains a little about his concepts, inspirations, help, support and his own thoughts about the tracks.

Genre(s): Deep House, House, Garage

Concept or theme behind EP: First EP I’ve made after the release of my album Traces on 2020 Vision. It was inspired by Steve Reich, a favorite classical composer of mine.

EP production experience: It was a joint decision made by myself and the label to get some new blood on the remix. We both really like the crossover garagey house sound, and thought Eliphino was perfect. He did a splendid job! Took some time though, but it was worth the wait.

Favorite Track of the EP: I love the remix, and play my original.

Artists supporting EP: Lee Curtiss, D’Julz, Lee Burridge, GERD, Catz n Dogz, Crazy P, Tiefshwarz, Anthony Collins, Alex Arnout and more.
