Having served as A&R for one of the most successful house music labels in Europe, RISE, Alex Gaudino knows good music when he hears it. Maybe it’s because of his own mind-blowing skills as a producer and DJ. Also a member of the trio ‘Lil Love, Alex has managed to juggle his own musical career with managing two labels. He sat down with mybeatFix to give us some insight on his projects, Miami, and the recipe to scoping out talent.
You founded your own label, RISE, in 1998. What moved you to start up your own label?
RISE was my own imprint at TIME, but I didn’t own it. After 13 years of running RISE it was time to try something on my own, so I opened Magnificent Records with my partner, Jason Rooney.
RISE was nominated as best European A&R at the European Music Awards in 2000. What is the key to finding good music?
It’s a chemical thing, I think. I really don’t know why it happens to me but I just feel it when it’s right.
Almost everybody who’s ever been clubbing has heard your track, “Destination Calabria.” When you first produced that track, did you anticipate how successful it would be?
To be absolutely honest, I had a gut feeling that it would do very well.
You are a favorite among music lovers in the Miami scene. So far, which is your favorite venue to play in Miami and why?
Anywhere in Miami is fine! It’s a fabulous town and I’d love to live there.
Any thoughts on how WMC 2012 stacked up to previous years?
I didn’t go this year and I didn’t miss it. I go to Miami five or six times a year and I prefer it at other times in the year. I think we need to go back to clubbing and tone down the festivals, but as long as it’s working, all good.
This year has been a good year for you, with successful releases like “In Love.” What are your expectations for the near future? Any upcoming projects or tours?
Alex: We’re finishing off the album and organizing a promo tour. I’ll be playing my music all around the world for as long as they let me!
