After recently performing at Ultra Music Festival 2012, it goes without saying that Pres and ZJ, better known as Lazerdisk Party Sex, have made it. LDPS’s winning remix of Diplo’s track “Horsey” has made its rounds in Miami, but without fail, every time it comes on we can’t help but dance.
mybeatFix recently caught up with the duo to talk about Star Wars, Vermont, and their plans for the future. Check out the interview below.
I’m sure you guys get both of these two questions a lot, but how did you guys decide on your name and why the Storm Trooper helmets?
Laser Disc represents the highest quality of video media, compared to VHS and Betamax. We compare our music to that standard of quality, cassette, mini disc etc. We changed our name from Laser Disc to Lazerdisk because we didn’t want to run into any legal issues with Phillips, who owns the name Laser Disc. To really get the message out there that we’re not square dudes, we added “party sex”. The Storm Trooper helmets represent originality because, as far as we know, there have never been any other masked DJs.
I know you’re both from Vermont, so why the move to Miami? What brought you guys down here and where are you hoping to eventually make home?
Mostly the Cuban food! We’ll be in Miami for a hot minute, but hope to set up studios nation wide.
I read in your bio that you both started off on sort of separate paths and then decided to become the duo you are now. What made you decide to become a team?
I was hiking on a mountain trail in Vermont, as most Vermonters do, and I happened to come across Zack who was going through the forest gathering his buckets of sap so that he could meet his maple syrup quota for the season while listening to “Eazy Duz It”. I stopped to tell him how much I loved that album and then the conversation led to us both talking about how we were DJs. Later, we skied back to our apartments, then met up, and decided that it would be a good idea to produce music together. The only stipulation being that we had to dress in costumes during performances.
With electronic music becoming so popular, how do you guys plan on keeping your sound unique?
That’s a great question. We pondered on how to make our sound stay unique. And we concluded to try to never make songs that sound dated or bad.
You were one of the winners in Diplo’s “Horsey” contest (huge fan of that song, btw) have recognition from Aoki, and you just played at Ultra Music Festival 2012, what’s next? Where do you hope to see LDPS in the future?
Thanks! Our goal is to put out seven albums, each one being better and longer than the next. Then, win a few awards, retire, and move to an elephant sanctuary in Thailand, like in The Protector.
Anything in the near future your fans should be looking out for? Any new tracks you guys are excited to be releasing? EPs? Shows?
We have a collaboration with Diplo on a track called “Set it Off” that’s coming out soon, and we did some work for the new Major Lazer album. We also recently did a remix for Steve Aoki’s track “Ooh” off of Wonderland. Fans have been asking for new merch and we’re expanding our product line, taking it a step further than your t-shirts and stickers. Be on the look out for a Lazerdisk Party Sex BBQ sauce coming soon to a Walgreens near you. We have all of the usual social media suspects, so you can check us out on Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud, Tumblr, and all of that stuff.
