Magda, Maceo and Maya take the cake at Last Resort in Miami

It was no surprise that this year’s Last Resort by SAFEmusic at Villa 221 was going to be a banger, but I’m sure all who attended will agree with me when I say it surpassed expectations. For those who have never been to Villa, it’s not a club or a bar. It’s a mansion. Yes, a mansion. Where there should be a master bedroom, kid’s rooms and a family area, you find DJs.

It has a huge backyard full of trees to hide behind, and grass with plenty of space to dance or sit – there’s even an area to charge your phone. SAFE has been well known in Miami for throwing some amazing parties. Just four days before Last Resort, they threw another doozy at the Villa, Flying Circus, featuring sets by the incredibly sexy Nina Kravis, Davide Squillace, Guy Gerber, My Favorite Robot, and M.A.N.D.Y.

Last Resort started at around 7 am, perfect timing for an after-hours to begin. With opening sets by DJ Three, Pillow Talk, Wolf + Lamb, Soul Clap, and Lee Curtiss, I knew this was going to be one for the books. I arrived when Magda was on, of course throwing down the funky metallic-like groove beats she’s known for.

But the ones who really took the cake were Maceo Plex and Maya Jane Coles. It doesn’t get anymore deep and soulful then Maceo Plex. He played an incredible set featuring his own tracks like “Stay high baby” which had everyone with their phones out trying to record it. The greatest set, however, goes to none other than the queen herself, Maya Jane Coles. She was so good she had Heidi and Magda frantically dancing and applauding her. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a DJ work the crown the way Maya did, playing tracks like P. Lopez and Catnapp’s “For the Fun” (Wowoqueros Remix). Sets like Maya’s had everyone saying “Sunday School who?”
