“I was quite anti-house because the only stuff that I heard was really cheesy vocal stuff on the radio…I hated it. I used to think, Who listens to that?” Maya Jane Coles admitted.
Maya Jane Coles, one of the most sought after names in today’s underground electronic music scene, has come a very long way since the days when house music left an ill taste in her mouth – and we’re all glad she has. In her short 24 years, the British-Japanese producer-turned-DJ already has a slew of chart-topping tracks under her belt in various genres and under multiple aliases. In 2011 alone she was voted ‘Producer of the Year 2011′ by DJ Mag, named ‘Best Breakthrough DJ 2011′ by Mixmag, and debuted at No. 9 on the Resident Advisor Top DJs Poll of 2011. Her undeniable talent has also landed her guest mixes for Defected, Trace A Line, Louche, Resident Advisor, and Pete Tong’s world-renowned Essential Mix series. And you know what they say – if the shoe fits, its time for a DJ-kicks mix! Well, you know what we mean…
The 22-track compilation mix that Maya has put together for DJ-Kicks is quite the winding ride, taking you from down-tempo deep house, to tech house, to two-step/dub with a few break-beat detours and a minimal finale.
“I don’t just do one thing and I wanted it to reflect that. Most of the mixes I’ve put out there so far have been house based, but I also produce stuff under the Nocturnal Sunshine moniker, which is more two-step/bass influenced stuff. This mix evolved into something that wasn’t just four-to-the-floor,” Maya expressed.
Her innate mixing ability and musical range shone brightly through the entire mix, with heavily supported tracks like Bozzwell’s “In My Cocoon” and Caribou’s remix of Virgo Four’s “It’s a Crime”, as well as her own productions. Maya drops two new exclusives on the kicks, “Not Listening” and “Meant to Be” under her Nocturnal Sunshine alter ego, both well-suited for high rankings on the charts in our opinion – but you’ll see for yourself soon enough.
The Maya Jane Coles edition of DJ-Kicks is slated to release on !K7 April 17. But you don’t have to wait til then to get a piece of Maya; she will be in the states for the 2012 Winter Music Conference in Miami! You can catch her at:
