His sound is different – borderline exotic. Emotional and original. And that’s what makes his music so captivating. Nicolas Jaar has been impressing the world with his productions and leaving audiences in awe one live act at a time.
This month, Nico brings us his Don’t Break My Love EP, released for free download under his own label, Clown and Sunset. The most beautiful detail of the EP is that both tracks (Jaar’s original productions) head steadily in one direction until a pivotal moment in which they essentially reinvent themselves.
“Don’t Break My Love” begins rather dramatic — a storm on a gloomy winter night. You can literally hear the thunder. The track intensifies with the introduction of rhythmic metallic percussion, soft synths and light vocal murmurs. It’s the kind of track you’d expect to be playing when you undergo some sort of life revelation. That, of course, would be represented by the epic break just before the end where Jaar stirs up some attitude with a funky bassline and the “don’t break my love” vocal sample from which the song gets its title.
“Why Didn’t You Save Me” incorporates a lot of those distinct sounds that make Nico Jaar’s productions so unique, making it a touch more chaotic than “Don’t Break My Love”. The piano chords conjure up feelings of despair. The whole track is a masterpiece of depression. So good. So emotional. The “why didn’t you save me” vocal sample sounds almost desperate. Makes me wonder what Jaar needed saving from.
Altogether the EP is a mini trip of intimacy – one I thoroughly enjoy. Bravo, Nico! Bravo!
