Watergate invited Lee Curtiss to mix the 8th installment in its mix series. With previous mixers including Onur Özer, Sebo K, Ellen Allien and Lee Jones I’m not sure Watergate has done a better job with its selection than with Curtiss. Curtiss, one fourth of what seems to be the hottest quartet in house music- Visionquest, is, in my opinion, at the top of his game. With releases on Wolf + Lamb, Get Physical, Culprit and Watergate Records, the pr DJ and is clearly a relevant choice. However, what makes Watergate 08 special isn’t the individual track selection. He could have dug a little deeper into his recordbox if you ask me. I’ve heard “Hate Love,” “Forward Motion,” and “Every Minute Alone” enough. What makes this mix special is the fact that the sound coming from Curtiss, Visionquest and the various artists he selected to put on the mix is the sound of today’s house music. The foresight of Watergate to choose Lee Curtiss for the mix, combined with Visionquest’s overall transition from edgy, risk-takers into the forefront of house, will prove to be a catalyst in cementing this relatively new mix series into the small group of all time great series. Watergate and the Visionquest camp, both, for lack of a better word, obscure veterans of the scene, are pushing their ways to the front of the line, and from the looks of it, are prepared to stay there for some time.
