The world of EDM stands divided: on one end of the spectrum, there’s the irrefutable talent that is taking creative quantum leaps to push the music forward into a pure untouchable dimension of originality. On the other end, there’s the lackluster atmosphere of glorified jukeboxes that assume since they’ve downloaded the newest versions of Traktor or Serato, they’ve somehow tapped into some divine power that will instantaneously turn them into a DJ. Well fortunately, that’s definitely not how the cookie crumbles, especially in EDM.
Electronic music is about connection and intimacy, it’s DJs being able to manipulate emotions and literally open uncharted auditory doors of perception, and not giving you a key to close them back up. Don’t get me wrong though. I love that people are taking the initiative to understand and control the music they listen to. And it’s awesome to see that more and more people are not subjecting themselves to whatever garbage is on the radio, or to whatever mindless promotional scheme some event promoter has come up with. It goes to show that we’re winning the good fight. Being an optimist at heart, I would love if that was the complete reality, but substance stands second to “buzz” or to “who you know” in the music industry.
The future is looking bright, though. Our generation is beginning to comprehend the power and the influence that music has on our everyday lives-of course not without getting a couple of bruises and welts along the ride. When I stumbled upon this dynamic duo, Cosmic Kids, it left me yearning for more. Keeping it to the core with a mystic dash of discohouse and a sort of a contemporary feel to their sets, the Cosmic kids are pumping out some much-needed original stuff.
Do not worry my brendrens, the age of understanding has begun to take its course, and we’re riding shotgun with half a pint of whiskey in one hand and a short-ended quellazaire in the other screaming “ITS SEEMS TO ME THAT WE’VE ENTERED BAT COUNTRY!” Sorry I was dying to drop Hunter S. line somewhere in my writing. Oh, not to forget the Web site that put me on to these guys,
www.uhohdisco.com , their posts are always insightful and I consider them in the upper echelon of the music blogsphere. Until next time, stay conscious, world.
